Self-care is a term that is gaining attention every day.  Some of us are masters of self-care; far too many of us do not take care of ourselves until we have reached a physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual crisis.  Self-care is simply prioritizing our own care- treating ourselves with at least the love and attention that we wish to reasonably give others and can reasonably expect from others.

For example…

Preparing myself a healthy, delicious breakfast.

Drawing myself a hot bath at the end of a hard day.  

Making daily choices that bolster my four-fold health, regardless of season or external demands on my time.  

Saying “no, thank you” to others’ requests so that I can keep my commitments to myself.

On a great day, we can treat ourselves with the love and care we would give our most beloved friend or lover.  I view my time doing self-care as a ritual- a cleaning of the temple, if you will.  It is during this time that I am able to most open myself to the guidance of my higher power.  There is nothing to be ashamed of and everything to celebrate about self-care.  If we do not care for our own emotional, spiritual, physical and mental health, we will not be able to give our best to the world.  When we are healthy and joyful, we have taken the first step on our own journey of bringing light into the world around us.
